  • Americans were lured by newspaper advertisements.
  • Thousands of Canadians from eastern Canada travelled westward to start a new life.
  • Advertising campaigns in Europe attracted thousands of Britons, Poles, Germans, Russians, Ukranians and Jews emigrating to Canada.
  • Many Jews, Italians and Ukranians settled in Montreal, making it a cosmopolitan city.
  • Between 1901 and 1911 the population of the Prairies jumped from 420,000 people to 1.3 million. In 1905, two new provinces joined Confederation, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
