Why was there
a wheat boom in Canada ?
The growing urban population created
a strong demand for wheat, dairy products, lumber and minerals.
-
Farm production increased as a result
of improved equipment and better varieties of seeds.
-
"Marquis" wheat allowed farmers to
plant in cooler regions of the Prairies.
-
Increased production of farm products
created greater demand for farm machinery from Quebec and Ontario factories.
-
Between 1901 and 1911 the number
of bushels exported by Canada increased from 10 million bushels to 46 million
bushels.
