Fully half of the working women were doing what was once deemed men's work: filling fuses, assembling radio tubes, operating small machines, welding and riveting. Women also ran streetcars, operated gas pumps, bottled beer in breweries and moved log booms at pulp mills.

Workers faced factory closings, and pay cuts. Wages were low, and working conditions became unsafe. Women were paid less than men. Wages were cut. Conditions were terrible.

The Canadian government ordered 22,000 Japanese Canadians to leave their homes, farms, and businesses in British Columbia. The Japanese Canadians were sent to detention camps and the government confiscated their property.

During the FLQ crisis Trudeau enacted the War Measures Act, which allowed the government to arrest people and hold them in jail without charging them with a crime.
