Visited in 1535 by the French explorer Jacques Cartier,
the island, to which he gives the name of Montréal, is then inhabited
by Amerindians who call the straggling village where they live Hochelaga.
Ville-Marie is founded on this island with the arrival of Paul de Chomedey
de Maisonneuve, Jeanne Mance and a few French colonists.
These latter give some substance to the project formed in France to
create a colony in New France dedicated to the Virgin and, subsequently
to the holy family. Towards 1700, the name of Ville-Marie fell out of use
and it became Montréal. |
