THE FRENCH REGIME

1. The king ruled the colony through the governor and the intendant. 

2. The filles du roi were mostly young orphan girls sent over to New France by the king. 

3. Ville Marie was founded by de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance in order to set up a religious  mission. 

4. The nuns taught the children and cared for the sick. 

5. The Sovereign Council was the colony's highest court of appeal.
